Definition of sentence and types of sentence

 

Sentences

A group of words which makes a complete sense is called a sentence.

Example:-
I eat a mango.        
He is going.            
Isha will sing a song.  

There are five types of sentence.

    1.     Assertive Sentence Or Declarative Sentence or Statement Sentence

    2.     Interrogative Sentence or Question Sentence

    3.     Imperative Sentence

    4.     Optative Sentence

    5.     Exclamatory Sentence

Assertive Sentence: A sentence which makes a statement is called assertive sentence.
Example:-
Shadma is busy.
  
We play.      

Interrogative Sentence: A sentence which asks a question is called interrogative sentence.
Example:-
Are you going?     

How are you?       

There are two types of question.

                                i.            Yes-No Question

                             ii.            Wh-Question

Yes-No Question: The question which answer is given in ‘yes’ or ‘no’ is called yes-no question.
It starts with auxiliary verbs ( 24 auxiliary verbs:-is, am, are, was, were, has, have, had, do, does, did, shall, should, will, would can, could, may, might, must, ought to, used to, need and dare).

Example:-
Are you a doctor?            

Is Rahul playing?             
Wh-Question: The question which answer is not given in yes or no is called wh-question.
It starts with question words (9 Question words:-who, whom, whose, what, which, where, when, why and how).

Example:-
What is his name?           

How are you?                   

Imperative Sentence: A sentence which indicates an order, a request, an advice, a prohibition, etc. is called imperative sentence.

Example:-
Shut the door.       
Please give me a pen.     

Optative Sentence: A sentence which indicates blessing or curse is called optative sentence.
Example:
-
May God help you!         

May he not get success!            

Exclamatory Sentence: A sentence which indicates some sudden feeling is called exclamatory sentence.

Example:-
How intelligent he is!     

How tall you are!              

 

Interchange of sentences

1.     Assertive to interrogative sentence
a)Assertive to yes-no question
Ex- Can you beat him? (Assertive)
you cannot beat him.
Is he calling me? (Assertive)
He is not calling me.
You cheated me. ( int)

Did you not cheat me?
Do you love me? (assertive)
You do not love me.
