occasion did Zakir Hussain deliver this speech?
Ans. Zakir Hussain delivered that speech in 1967 after taking an oath as
president of India.
2. ‘The past is
not dead and static’ who says this and why?
Ans. It is Dr Zakir Hussain who says, that the past is not dead and static. In
his view, past determine the quality of our present and the prospects of our
future.
3. In what
context does Dr. Zakir Hussain say “Bharat is my home”?
Ans. Dr Zakir Hussain understands that India is made up of a variety of people,
races, castes and languages. But since he is elected president of India, he is
expected to represent this multiplicity of ethnic elements. That is why,
asserts that the whole of Bharat is his home.
4. What does ‘work on one’s self’ mean?
Ans. Work on oneself means to follow the urge towards moral development as a
free person under self imposed discipline.
5. Why does Dr Zakir Hussain call India ‘the young state of an ancient
people’?
Ans. India is an ancient civilization. The history of her people goes back to
thousands of years. But it is new state that was born after India won freedom
in August 1947 and become a republic on 26th January 1950.

Ans. He is overwhelmed by the trust his people have placed in him by electing
him to the highest office in the country.

Ans. He feels greatly obliged to the people of the country and enters this
office in a spirit of prayerful humility and total dedication.
